White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci to step down in December

Nation’s Top Infectious Disease Expert, Dr Anthony Fauci, leaving his position in
December after spending decades in office.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, 81, has served at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for 38 years. He was appointed the Director of the NIAID during former President Ronald Reagan’s
administration.

He actively led the United States’ response to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic, West Nile virus, Anthrax
attacks, Influenza, various Bird Influenza threats, Ebola, Covid-19 and Zika. But in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Fauci and former President Donald Trump publicly disagreed on how to approach the crisis. Their constant disagreement led to Trump’s suggestion of firing the doctor. As a result, Fauci says he started to receive death threats and had to increase his security. Recently, Fauci announced that he would be stepping down from his position by December to pursue the next chapter of his career mentioning that the threats didn’t influence his decision to resign.

President Joe Biden praised his work in a statement noting his “unwavering, unparalleled spirit,
energy, and scientific integrity commitment to the work.”
