Black Woman Files Lawsuit After Scalp Ripped Off by a Police K9 While Stealing $10,000 Worth of Ulta Beauty Supply Products

On February 10, 2020, then 24 year old Talmika Bates was seriously injured after she was brutally attacked by a German Shepherd police dog named Marco. She said that her braids were ripped off after she was mauled by Marco who was instructed by Officer Ryan Rezentes to attack her. Marco had to be removed physically from her by the officers. Ryan Rezentes argued that Marco independently attacked Bates after being commanded to “heel” twice.   

Two years later, with a huge scar and trauma in her head, Bates filed a lawsuit against the Brentwood police stating that the police instructed Marco to charge towards the woman without giving her the opportunity to surrender. Bates came into contact with police after officers responded to a theft involving her along with a few other women at an Ulta Beauty Supply store in Oakland, CA. In Bate’s shoplifting case, she pled guilty for felony theft and was sentenced to 120 days in jail and one year probation.
